Beat Summer Boredom with Our Give Back Group Benefit

July 27, 2026

Summer vacation is an exciting time packed with trips, camps, and sports, but we’ve all reached that point where we hear those dreaded words: “I’m bored!” With GBU Life’s Give Back Group benefit, you can keep your family busy while helping others without the pressure of covering project costs.

If you are planning your own project to help your local community, GBU Life will reimburse your project expenses up to $250 per GBU Life member in your group ($1,000 max). Reimbursable expenses include supplies you need for your project or costs associated with hosting community events. Here are a few service project ideas that are great for families to complete together or for older children to complete on their own.

Host a Yard Sale or Bake Sale

Organize a yard and/or bake sale to support a nonprofit organization important to your family. Start-up funds can cover supplies for making promotional signs and posters, ingredients for baking items, and store-bought baked goods.

Donate Hygiene Kits

Many food banks also collect hygiene kits, which contain essential daily hygiene items such as soap, shampoo, deodorant, and toothpaste. Purchase items and build kits per your receiving organization’s guidelines, and use start-up funds to cover supply costs.

Create an Educational Campaign

Is there a cause or topic your child is passionate about? Have them create materials to share with their community. Whether it’s littering, helping animals, or something else, start-up funds can cover the costs of creating educational materials such as flyers, postcards, buttons, and more.

Build a Little Free Library

A Little Free Library is not only a fun family project, but a great way to share your favorite books with your neighborhood. Start-up funds can cover the costs of building materials and any books purchased for the library.

Pack and Donate Backpacks

Starting in July and into August, many communities across the country begin collecting backpacks and school supplies to help underprivileged students. Start-up funds can cover the cost to purchase school supplies and backpacks to donate.

Plant a Pollinator Garden

Support your local honey bee and butterfly populations with a pollinator garden. Research local flora that supports pollinators and plant a pollinator garden using start-up funds to cover the costs of seeds, plants, and other supplies.

Since its founding, the GBU Foundation has awarded 4,500 scholarships and educational grants totaling more than $3.2 million. In 2025, 215 members received $226,000 to support their two‑year, four‑year and graduate studies. To celebrate our 134th anniversary, GBU Life launched the Birthday Bash initiative, calling upon the GBU Life community to honor our fraternal legacy through service. GBU Life invited members, producers, and community leaders to assemble and deliver shelf-stable cake kits for individuals and families who may otherwise go without a birthday celebration. What can seem like a simple act of service could be the spark of hope someone needed.
