Turn Over a New Leaf in September and Learn a New Language

August 29, 2025

As the days shorten and autumn leaves begin to change, September gently invites us to refocus our minds to new possibilities. Much like nature turns over a new leaf, this time of year inspires transformation. What better way to grow than by learning a new language?

Why September Is Ideal for Language Learning

  • Fresh-start energy. With summer behind us and routines resuming, September feels like a natural reset—perfect for starting a new habit.
  • Mental fitness. Studies show language learning boosts memory, multitasking abilities, and creativity—helps keep our brains sharp well into adulthood.
  • Cultural connection. Whether for travel, work, or local community engagement, a new language deepens empathy and opens doors.
  • Long-term payoff. It’s not just about vocabulary—it’s discipline, curiosity, confidence, and cognitive resilience too.

Learning Just Got Easier for GBU Life Members

If you're a GBU Life insured or social member, there’s even more motivation to start now. You’re eligible for a 50% reimbursement (up to $250/year) on any language learning program. This includes popular apps like Duolingo and Babbel.

How to Take Get Reimbursed

  1. Select your language-learning platform. Examples include Duolingo, Babbel or Rosetta Stone.
  2. Pay up front for your subscription or course.
  3. Submit a reimbursement request through GBU. Half of your cost, up to $250/year, is covered.
  4. Boost your learning knowing it’s budget-friendly and backed by GBU.

Make Your Learning Stick

  • Commit 10–20 minutes a day: even small, steady progress pays off.
  • Mix media: combine app lessons with music, podcasts or videos in your target language.
  • Use it in real life: label items around your home, chat with friends or practice on social platforms.
  • Track milestones: celebrate when you complete lessons, hit a streak or carry a short conversation.

Start your daily habit in September and watch your skills grow. Let this season be your launchpad.

Every child can name a teacher who made a difference: the one who stayed late to help, offered encouragement at just the right moment or made learning feel exciting. Recognizing a teacher’s dedication doesn’t require grand gestures, but it does call for intention. Thoughtful appreciation gifts, especially during Teacher Appreciation Week or year-end celebrations, offer a tangible way to express heartfelt gratitude.
