As summer draws to a close, the back-to-school season brings with it a whirlwind of excitement, preparation and additional expenses. However, savvy shoppers know that with a bit of strategy, it’s possible to save significantly on school supplies. Here’s a guide to help you find the best back-to-school discounts and deals, ensuring your student is well-prepared without breaking the bank.

Start Early and Make a List

Begin your shopping early to take advantage of early-bird sales and avoid the last-minute rush. Create a detailed list of everything your child needs, from notebooks and pens to clothing and electronics. A well-organized list helps you stay focused and prevents impulse buys that can quickly add up.

Compare Prices Online

The internet is a treasure trove of information when it comes to finding the best deals. Use price comparison websites like Google Shopping, Idealo or Shopzilla to compare prices across different retailers. This helps you identify which stores offer the best deals on specific items. Additionally, many online retailers offer exclusive discounts and promo codes that you won’t find in-store.

Sign Up for Newsletters

Some retailers offer exclusive discounts to customers who subscribe to their newsletters. Sign up for newsletters from your favorite stores to receive notifications about upcoming sales, special promotions and exclusive coupons. Some stores even offer a discount just for signing up.

Take Advantage of Tax-Free Weekends

Many states have tax-free weekends during the back-to-school season, where you can purchase certain items without paying sales tax. This can result in significant savings, especially on big-ticket items like laptops and tablets. Check your state’s tax-free weekend dates and eligible items to maximize your savings.

Use Cashback and Rewards Programs

Take advantage of cashback websites like Rakuten, Swagbucks or Honey. These sites offer cashback on purchases made through their links, providing an additional way to save. Additionally, use credit cards that offer rewards or cashback on purchases to further increase your savings.

Shop Sales and Clearance Sections

Remember to shop the sales and clearance sections where you can find heavily discounted items. Look for end-of-season sales, clearance events and special promotions. Don’t forget to check the clearance section both online and in-store for hidden gems at unbeatable prices.

Note: just because something is on sale doesn’t mean it’s the best price. Some retailers have been caught artificially inflating prices before a promotion, making the “discount” seem bigger than it actually is. Always compare prices across multiple stores or websites and if possible, check the item’s price history. A little research can go a long way in making sure you’re truly getting a good deal.

Utilize Student Discounts

Retailers may provide student discounts on a variety of products, from clothing to electronics. Make sure your child has their student ID handy to take advantage of these deals. Some popular stores offering student discounts include Apple, Microsoft and various clothing retailers.

Buy in Bulk

For items that your child will need throughout the school year, such as notebooks, pens and paper, consider buying in bulk. Wholesale clubs like Costco and Sam’s Club often offer significant discounts on bulk purchases. While it requires a larger initial investment, buying in bulk can save you money in the long run. You can even combine forces with another parent who’s purchasing similar products for their child.

Look for Coupons and Promo Codes

Before making any online purchase, search for coupons and promo codes. Websites like RetailMeNot, Coupons.com and Honey offer a wide range of discount codes for various retailers. Some browser extensions automatically apply the best available coupons at checkout.

Stay Organized and Track Your Spending

Keep track of your spending to ensure you stay within your budget. Use a spreadsheet or a budgeting app to monitor your purchases and ensure you’re not overspending. Staying organized helps you make informed decisions and avoid unnecessary expenses.

By implementing these tips, you can navigate the back-to-school shopping season with ease and confidence, ensuring your child has everything they need for a successful school year without breaking the bank.
