This may seem like a no-brainer, but most people don’t drink enough water to stay hydrated throughout the day. A good way to ensure you’re getting enough is to make drinking a glass of water a part of your daily routine. For example, drink a full glass of water when you take a vitamin or medication, or make a rule that family members can’t leave the table until they finish a glass of water. The classic six to eight ounce glasses of water a day is a great goal. But you may need a few more glasses depending on your activity throughout the day.
Not a fan of plain water? Add cucumber, lemon or orange slices to your glass of water to add a hint of flavor without adding calories.
When you’re feeling run-down, snack on fruits and vegetables that have high-water content such as grapes, watermelon, celery, cucumbers and apples. Not only do these foods make great snacks on the go, but they can help you stay hydrated in the summer heat.
While drinking an energy drink or soft drink when feeling fatigued may seem like a good idea, it’s not in your best interest. Drinks with sugar, caffeine and alcohol will dehydrate you as they act as a diuretic, which means going to the bathroom more frequently. In short, you will lose fluids versus maintaining or increasing them. So, if you’re out to dinner and end up ordering a margarita or are out shopping and grab a soft drink in the checkout lane, be sure to drink a full glass of water afterward to balance it out.
