How to Pull off the Ultimate Backyard Drive-In Movies
Steps
If you are still reading this, my guess is that you are at the very least, "intrigued" by taking on the challenge of backyard drive-in. The beauty of this project is that you can easily modify certain parts if your budget or time does not allow for it. Premade cars can be purchased on Amazon in place of designing cars on your own. Also, this activity can be done inside if you do not have a yard or a way to display the movie outdoors.
List of Services

Build and decorate your cars.List Item 1
Make sure you build and paint your cars at least 24 hours in advance of your movie to give the paint enough time to dry. Once you have your materials ready, decide on your car design and keep a photo handy for inspiration. Youtube tutorials are also very helpful in explaining exactly how to build the car.
Materials Needed
- 1 large box per child
- At least 1 can of spray paint per car (For multiple cars, get a handful of colors your kids can share)
- Clear packing tape
- Scissors
Pro Tips
- To avoid a mess, do the painting outside in the grass away from the house.
- Walmart usually gives large boxes away for free if you call in advance and ask for them.
- Paper plates make great wheels
- Plastic wrap makes a great windshield
- Aluminum foil is great for headlights or other typically shiny objects.

Plan your snack bar.List Item 2
Buy candy in bulk at Walmart or Sam’s Club. It works well to get a mix of different kinds, and then separate each type of candy into smaller, “kid-friendly” bags to avoid future bellyaches. You could also buy premade popcorn and separate into baggies as well, although we prefer to pop our popcorn and separate right before the movie. Juice boxes and bottled waters make great drinks for a snack bar. If you feel inclined, you can also bake brownies or something similar. It’s great to have a variety of different snacks to give off the feel of a real snack bar.
-
Create your signs.List Item 3
Once you decide on your movie, it's time to create a sign and a snack bar price menu for your event. Decide on a payment form and designate the amount per item. For example, each child gets five tickets. Popcorn, candy bars, bags of gummy bears, drinks and baked goods are all one ticket each.

Set up your drive-in and let the fun begin. Write a description for this list item and include information that will interest site visitors. For example, you may want to describe a team member's experience, what makes a product special, or a unique service that you offer.
