Fun Winter Indoor Activities for the Whole Family
November 20, 2024

When the cold winds blow and snow blankets the ground, it’s tempting to stay snuggled up at home. Winter is a perfect time to bond with family and create cozy, memorable moments indoors. From fun games to creative crafts, here are some top indoor activities to bring everyone together and beat the winter blues.
1. DIY Hot Chocolate Bar
Transform a chilly day into a warm celebration with a DIY hot chocolate bar! Set up a station with different hot chocolate flavors such as classic, white chocolate, and peppermint. Arrange toppings like marshmallows, whipped cream, chocolate chips and crushed candy canes, and let everyone build their own perfect cup. Don’t forget mugs and spoons for stirring! This cozy treat is an instant crowd-pleaser and perfect for kids and adults.
2. Family Game Night
Nothing brings out the laughter quite like a family game night. Choose classic board games, such as Monopoly, Scrabble, or Uno, or introduce the family to new favorites. For something a little more active, try charades or Pictionary. Family game night is a wonderful way to create lasting memories and get everyone laughing and working together.
3. Indoor Scavenger Hunt
Bring a touch of adventure to your home with an indoor scavenger hunt. Create a list of items for everyone to find around the house, such as a red sock, a spoon, a toy car or a book with animals. Add a few clues to make the hunt more challenging for older kids. You could even set up small prizes for each completed item or team up for a race to the finish. It’s a fantastic way to get moving and spark some family-friendly competition.
4. Movie Marathon and Blanket Forts
Turn your living room into a cozy movie theater! Build a blanket fort with sheets and cushions, dim the lights and stack up plenty of pillows. Choose a family-friendly movie theme, like animated classics or holiday favorites, and line up a few films to watch back-to-back. Pop some popcorn, add a few cozy blankets and enjoy a relaxing movie marathon together. This warm and cozy setup makes movie-watching extra special.
5. Baking Extravaganza
Winter is the perfect time to bake delicious treats as a family. Pick a simple recipe like chocolate chip cookies, brownies or cupcakes. Let everyone take part; have one person measure, another stir and someone else decorate. If you’re up for a challenge, try a themed baking activity like decorating cookies as snowmen or building a gingerbread house. The best part? You get to enjoy tasty treats together after all your hard work.
6. DIY Craft Day
Get creative with a DIY craft day! Gather materials like colored paper, markers, glue and stickers, and let everyone make their own winter-themed crafts. Snowflakes, paper garlands and handmade cards are easy, fun crafts that everyone can personalize. For a little extra flair, try making homemade ornaments or decorating picture frames to hold your favorite family photos. Crafting is a wonderful way to slow down and enjoy some hands-on fun.
7. Puzzle Challenge
If your family loves a challenge, try working on a big jigsaw puzzle together. Puzzles are great for problem-solving and teamwork, and there’s something incredibly satisfying about seeing the pieces come together. Choose a winter-themed puzzle or one with a scene that makes you think of warmer days. Spread out a cozy blanket, grab some snacks, and work together to complete it over the weekend.
These indoor activities make wintertime feel extra cozy, turning even the coldest days into opportunities for family bonding. Whether you’re baking, crafting, or having a game night, winter offers the chance to create special memories together. So grab some hot cocoa, gather your loved ones and make the most of your indoor winter wonderland!
The GBU Life Scholarship Awards support students in college, trade programs, non-college programs, and graduate school, helping them achieve their dreams, setting them on a career path and realizing life goals. Since its founding, the GBU Foundation has awarded 4,500 scholarships and educational grants totaling more than $3.2 million. In 2025, 215 members received $226,000 to support their two‑year, four‑year and graduate studies. Here’s a look at where the rubber meets the road — as we check in on past grantees to see how their scholarship awards have helped them stay on course, where they are now, and where they hope to be in the future.
To celebrate our 134th anniversary, GBU Life launched the Birthday Bash initiative, calling upon the GBU Life community to honor our fraternal legacy through service. GBU Life invited members, producers, and community leaders to assemble and deliver shelf-stable cake kits for individuals and families who may otherwise go without a birthday celebration. What can seem like a simple act of service could be the spark of hope someone needed.
