DIY Tie Die
April 12, 2021
What You'll Need
- Tie-dye kit
- Rubber bands (2-8 per shirt)
- Gloves
- Plastic bags (1 per shirt)
- Wire cooling racks
- Utility sink or bathtub
- T-shirts (cotton, wool, silk or rayon)
Procedure
- Pre-wash your shirts and leave them damp from the washing machine.
- Fold and rubber band your shirts as desired.
- Mix up the bottles of dye.
- Place wire racks on the bottom of the bathtub or utility sink so that the shirts don’t sit in the puddle of excess dye.
- Squirt the dye onto the shirts, making sure that the dye gets down inside the folds. Let the excess dye drip off, then wrap the shirt tightly in a plastic bag.
- Wash dye down the sink/tub drain between each shirt to avoid staining the sink/tub.
- Once all the shirts have been dyed and wrapped in plastic bags, set them somewhere warm for 24 hours.
- After 24 hours, carefully cut off the rubber bands and rinse the shirts in cold water to get the excess dye out.
- Don't worry if there is still a small amount of excess dye left after the rinse. Just toss the shirts into the washing machine for a light wash and cold rinse to make sure that all of the remaining dye is removed.
- Finish by drying on high heat to further set the colors, and your shirts are ready to wear!
Tips
- Recommend using a Tulip One-Step Tie-Dye Kit.
- Latex gloves work the best.
