A Spirited DIY Craft

October 31, 2023
Looking for a cheap but spooky DIY craft this Halloween? We have you covered.  These DIY glow-up ghosts are adorable, festive, and can be made using mostly things you already have at home!

Supplies
Steps

  1. Pour approximately 1.5 cups of rice into the empty plastic bottle using a funnel. The rice should fill about 1/3 of the entire bottle.
  2. Screw Styrofoam ball down onto the rim of the bottle. Keep screwing until it's secure.
  3. Stick a large glue dot on the top center part of the ball (this will be used later). Stick another two large dots underneath the ball, on each side in order to better secure the ball.
  4. Take the battery pack and tape the cord that goes into the battery back to the bottom half of the bottle (make sure not to tape up the battery pack itself and just let the pack hang).
  5. Wrap the lights around bottle, taping them down as you go. Work your way up toward the head and wrap lights around the head, pressing into ball to fasten but do not put tape on ball itself. If your lights are loose on the ball, you can use a glue dot to secure.
  6. Cut off tags from dish cloth and open cloth to find the very middle. Put the cloth over the head of the ghost and push onto the large glue dot that is on the head. Tuck edges of cloth underneath ghost.
  7. Knot the headband in the back and place on ghost head. Feel free to fray the yarn if you please.
  8. Pick your flowers and/or garland and fasten them to the headband using your small glue dots.
  9. Cut out your eyes and mouth (if you want one) using the black foam and peel off the adhesive paper on back. Attach to your ghost.
  10. Turn on the battery pack and name your ghost.

Every child can name a teacher who made a difference: the one who stayed late to help, offered encouragement at just the right moment or made learning feel exciting. Recognizing a teacher’s dedication doesn’t require grand gestures, but it does call for intention. Thoughtful appreciation gifts, especially during Teacher Appreciation Week or year-end celebrations, offer a tangible way to express heartfelt gratitude.
